History and Key Successes of the Organisation
A Brief History of the Organisation
Disabled Rehabilitation and Rural Development Organisation (DARRDO) is a non-profit, non-Governmental social development organisation established in Mangsir 2060 under the Associations (Society) Registration Act 1977 of Nepal. The organisation is also registered in the District Administration Office (DAO) and is affiliated with Social Welfare Council. The office is located in Gamgadhi.
It is a district level Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) initiated by a group of people with various types of disability, committed to advocate for issues relating to disability. The organisation was established in order to bring help and support to people with disabilities (PWD) by advocating for their rights and equal opportunities. In the beginning it was difficult for the organisation to run properly because of limited resources. All the members of the Board contributed money to collect statistics of PWD in the district. Gradually, DARRDO began to coordinate with district line agencies and started to work in the communities.
Key Successes and Achievements of the Organisation:
- 41 CWDs (10 in 2016, 2 new cases and 8 follow up cases) received surgical treatment and were rehabilitated into their communities;
- 73 (21 female) PWDs became involved in 7 VDC level networks, where their advocacy skills were built up and they secured resources from local bodies;
- A student with hearing disability obtained access to higher education;
- 700 copies of a disability resource book were distributed to all district line agencies;
- Increased the number of people with a disability who accessed benefits to which they are entitled to from the Government.
