Where would you like to contribute?

What do these include?

  • Medical rehabilitation: Medical rehabilitation for persons with disabilities refers to a set of health-related services aimed at helping individuals become medically fit after the onset of a disability. This also includes training on how to properly use their assistive devices and may even cover costs to improve access to therapy.
  • Assistive devices: These devices help people with disabilities do everyday activities more easily and independently. This includes wheelchairs, artificial limbs, orthosis, walkers, walking sticks or crutches.
  • House modification services: House modification services involve making changes to a house to make it easier, safer and more comfortable for people with disabilities to live in. Through this appeal, UMN will support modifications to homes and toilets, specifically for active wheelchair users. This will ensure access to key areas of their homes, including the bedroom, kitchen, toilet, water facilities and yard. UMN contributes 50% of the cost for these modifications, while the remaining amount is covered by the participant’s family.
Sunshine after darkness

For years, Harka Bahadur* could only dream of feeling the sunshine on his face. After a fall while cutting grass for his livestock left him with a spinal injury, he lived shut inside his room, cut off from light and life. Struggling with simple daily activities, Harka Bahadur also had to battle negative thoughts. “It embarrassed me, and I felt I was a burden to my family and wife. Sometimes, I felt so depressed and questioned why I was alive. I felt that it was better to die than to live,” he shared.

With small but life-changing support from UMN and its partner organisation, Harka Bahadur’s home was modified to meet his needs. He can freely move through his living room, toilet, kitchen and yard by himself without any barriers. He is able to experience the joy of cooking for himself and his family, which he could not do before. After 12 long years of darkness and isolation, Harka Bahadur now greets each sunrise with open arms and a grateful heart.
