"Working in UMN has been a tremendous learning journey for me..."
...and I am still here after three decades. It is like a second home to me. I started my job as an assistant trainer/motivator and now I oversee the Programme Support Team as a Team Leader, also supporting as a UMN Leadership Team member. So, why have I stayed here for so long, despite the challenges and numerous change processes that I have experienced? For me, the heart of an organisation is its core values and the belief system that acknowledges each individual as they are seen in the eyes of God. The multicultural working environment and value-based systems; feeling the sacrifices of missionaries; having a space to demonstrate your professional passion; having encouraging line managers and trustworthy colleagues through the years; witnessing community transformation and empowerment through our small efforts and investing in the growth and development of its staff through a holistic care approach – these are what kept me working in UMN. Therefore, if you are interested in joining us, you are most welcome to experience us as a worldwide family working towards a vision of "fullness of life for all in a transformed Nepali society".

"A working environment that is caring and supportive"
Certain things have remained constant in UMN despite some major changes in our structure over the years. These include a working environment that is caring and supportive, provision of ongoing opportunities for staff to build their professional competence and take up roles that fit their expertise, values of appreciating dedication and hard work, and a focus on transforming the lives of the poorest people living in poverty. These ‘constants’ have played an essential role in motivating me to work in UMN in a journey from an administrative assistant to the current role of leading UMN’s Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, Learning and Cross-Cutting Team.
My first job in 1996 was typing up handwritten reports prepared by colleagues who gave capacity-building training to project staff in other districts. I would also translate reports from English to Nepali and vice-versa. While typing and translating reports, I made an intentional effort to learn about the work these guys were doing in the field. After a couple of years, I felt confident enough to do the fieldwork my other colleagues did. My line manager provided a supportive and enabling environment for me to start the fieldwork, ensuring that I was accompanied by experienced colleagues in the initial field visits. I was also allowed to study an international-level diploma course in community-based development. Later I was fortunate to be a part of facilitating several existing projects to transition into Nepali organisations. Some of these NGOs are now established as leading national-level organisations.

"It's not just a job; it's a place where passion meets purpose."
I am Suraj Sonar, a resident of Kapilvastu District, working in UMN as a Resilient Livelihoods Project Manager based in Rukum East. My journey with UMN began in October 2012 when I joined as a Project Officer - Livelihoods (Disaster Management) in the Rupandehi cluster office. Initially, I was surprised to see the low project budget and working modality of engaging with low-capacity local partners. But gradually, I realised and experienced how even a small budget can change needy people's lives in remote locations which are rarely reached by others. I also appreciate the flexibility of working according to the needs of the community. I have a passion for working in disaster management, so I feel very fortunate to have been involved through UMN, as a key humanitarian agency, in several disaster risk reduction and disaster response activities.
The organisation’s values changed my thoughts, way of living, and worldview. UMN is not just a job; it's a place where passion meets purpose, which has given me immense satisfaction and kept me dedicated to this incredible team for a long time. Working for UMN has been an enriching experience for me and many others, and I am grateful to be a part of this transformative journey.
