Twenty-seven local masons from two rural municipalities of Rukum East District took part in an earthquake resistant structure training. The seven-day training starting 31 May was jointly organised by UMN’s two local partners. The training’s objective was to upgrade the local mason’s skills in quality construction and develop skillful human resources in earthquake-resistant construction. It was also to start disaster mitigation, preparedness and raise awareness at the community level.
Due to weak structures which are constructed without applying any earthquake safety measures, most houses in Rukum East District are highly vulnerable to earthquakes. So, the training was conducted as per the standard curriculum of the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction.
