Pinkala Harijan, from Nawalparasi, grew up in a society where daughters are often seen as a burden and dowry is the norm. Families with daughters face a constant pressure to provide dowry, making them prioritise saving for a daughter’s marriage over her education. Despite these societal norms, Pinkala studied to become a lab technician.
Like many others in the community, Pinkala’s family believed in the tradition of dowry. Even though she knew the practice was wrong, she did not have the confidence to speak out against it. Joining the Ekata Adolescent Group transformed Pinkala’s confidence and understanding of gender equality. She actively participated in sessions, rallies, campaigns and dramas against social injustice.
When faced with a marriage proposal demanding dowry, Pinkala bravely rejected it, educating her family about its legal consequences. Her courage sparked a change within her family and community, showing that self-belief can dismantle harmful traditions and proving that knowledge empowers girls to create change.
