Sloshing about over the ankles in sticky black mud collecting baskets full of rubbish is not everyone’s idea of a good time! It was hot, smelly and very dirty work, but the 17 UMN staff members who arrived at Teku Dobhan at 7:00am on Saturday morning threw themselves into it (well, not literally). The occasion was International Youth Day 2014, and the Association of International NGOs in Nepal organised representatives of many INGOs to attend, at the invitation of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Chief Secretary of the Ministry, Leela Mani Poudel, inaugurated the programme, and around 500 people from INGOs, the Nepal Army and Police, and other organisations participated. The ongoing Bagmati Cleaning Campaign hopes to transform the rubbish-covered banks of the river into attractive parkland, and after the clean-up, more than 100 trees were planted.
