When the disaster struck, Kabiraj was on duty inside a hydropower tunnel, about 200 metres underground, along with nine other co-workers. Miraculously, he survived and returned home after four days only to find that his house and everything he owned had been destroyed.

This was just the first bad news. Then came the news that broke him completely. He tells us that his three children, two girls aged 10 and 8, and his 18-month-old son were swept away by the flood too.

He and his wife are staying at the holding centre. Broken and barely able to speak, he asks us, “Where and how do I restart my life?”
