Hear women from Rukum East share their experiences of being forced into marriage at a very young age.
Festivals are usually a time of joy and fun, but not for young girls in Rukum East. Tani Bibaha, an age-old (controversial) practice in which girls are hauled away by men and forced into marriage without their consent, takes place. It is illegal and treated as a crime under Nepali law. Although now very rare, UMN’s ABLE project has been working in this area to protect young girls and women from this tradition and from early marriage.
