For two years, a community in Surkhet District struggled with a damaged drinking water system. The burden fell heavily on women, who were responsible for collecting water daily.

A self-help group formed with UMN’s support highlighted the water system as a pressing issue at its first meeting. Within two days, the members (23 women and 3 men) dug trenches, laid pipes and restored the water supply. They resolved a challenge that had persisted for years in just 48 hours.
