Early in the morning of 4 August, the Ghorai River in Kapilbastu overflowed with monsoon rain, sending a wave of muddy water rushing through Kaluai village. People in the village had no warning at all, and could only watch helpless as sacks of rice, wheat and maize, chicks and goat kids were swept away. Animal sheds and water tube-wells were damaged. Altogether, 72 people from 11 households lost all their food stocks, and suffered damage to their houses and loss of household goods.
Through its Rupandehi cluster team and local partners, UMN will be providing essential food supplies (rice, wheat, gram, peas, onions, oil, salt and potatoes) to these families, to a value of about NRP 84,735 (USD 965).
