On the occasion of the 50th World Environment Day, Rukum East Cluster organised various events in line with the slogan ‘Beat plastic pollution.’ To reduce plastic usage, all shops in Taka village have displayed informative notices emphasising the importance of bringing their bags while shopping.

Sixty community members participated in a sanitation programme organised jointly with UMN’s local partner and the rural municipality (RM). The RM has also established temporary pits to manage solid waste along with identifying a permanent dumping site. The sanitation work was simultaneously organised in all the ward offices along with plantations in one of the remote villages.

Two schools held an oratory competition with the theme ‘the effects of plastic on human health. Another local school also established a herbal garden.

Celebrating the day, UMN’s team in Kapilvastu District also planted 150 tree saplings together with our partner staff and the community in Yashodhara Rural Municipality. Planting trees is one small way each of us can help improve the environment.

Also, in Kapilvastu District, UMN has worked in restoring eight local ponds.
