Life used to be tough for Janma and her family in Mugu, especially when it came to food security. Despite owning 5 Ropanis (approx. 2544 square metres) of land, they could only grow crops during two seasons each year due to the challenging mountainous terrain.
Through one of UMN’s projects, Janma had the opportunity to join a civic education group, where she received training in various topics, including vegetable farming. After the training, she received plastic for a polyhouse, a water sprinkler and 12 varieties of vegetable seeds.
“I remember not being able to afford green vegetables,” Janma shared. “Even after giving birth. I was eating just rice with salt,” she recalled. Now, Janma grows vegetables like spinach, coriander, onion and tomatoes in her polyhouse. This not only feeds her family but also boosts their income as she sells the surplus. Thanks to her efforts, Janma’s family now enjoys nutritious meals regularly, and their health has improved significantly.
