Nepal Appreciation – An art exhibition

An art exhibition with a difference opened in Kathmandu’s Park Gallery last Thursday. “Nepal Appreciation” is the first solo exhibition for Miriam Krantz, 75, who learned to paint just five years ago. Miriam has been in Nepal for almost 50 years now. Many UMNers will remember her ground-breaking work in nutrition, where she pioneered the use of “super porridge” to feed severely malnourished children. Now retired, Miriam has spent her time learning to do the things she always wanted to do, like playing the sarangi (Nepali violin), and painting. “Nepal Appreciation” includes works in watercolour, acrylic and oils, mainly featuring rural Nepali life. The paintings are colourful and evocative; they celebrate the spirit and resilience of Nepali villagers, but do not romanticise or trivialise their hard work and struggles. UMN congratulates Miriam on this great achievement. If you are living in Nepal, a visit to the Park Gallery, Pulchowk, before 5 June is sure to be rewarding.
