Simulation for earthquake safety
Posted on January 13, 2023 under News
Students, teachers and local leaders practised effective response during a simulated earthquake drill at a secondary school in Thalara, Bajhang recently, for Nepal's Earthquake Safety Day. Viewers had a near-to-real-life experience of an earthquake, giving an opportunity to learn how to respond effectively during an earthquake at community level, including first aid, building a shelter and how timely communication and response can save the loss of life and assets.
The simulation exercise organised through UMN’s Disaster Risk Management Project was conducted at Laxmi Secondary School of Thalara Rural Municipality on 13 January*, with the active participation of students, teachers, the ward chairperson and health post representatives, and was facilitated by the Red Cross Society in Bajhang. Such training is vital to transfer of knowledge of earthquake preparedness, safe rescue, and management of risk through behaviour change – Thalara suffered from a damaging earthquake just two months earlier, in November 2022.
* It was conducted early due to school holidays during the week of the Earthquake Safety Day on 16 January / 2 Magh.
